2018-19 OnBoard Program to Begin in September
The 2018-19 OnBoard program will be starting on September 20, 2018. OnBoard prepares high-potential professionals for service on nonprofit boards and introduces them to organizations that would benefit from their involvement. This certificate program is a collaborative effort between the Alliance for Better Nonprofits and the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee. OnBoard is partially underwritten by Cellular Sales.
OnBoard participants are sponsored by outstanding corporations and institutions from across East Tennessee, including First Tennessee Bank, Knoxville Utilities Board, LHP Capital, LLC, Pilot Flying J, the University of Tennessee, and others. The program offers a convenient, low-cost option for developing the sort of “boardroom” thinking needed in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. Participants gain insights about the region and the nonprofits seeking to improve it, and they learn what is required for sound board-level thinking and oversight. They will build a network of strong contacts from across the region, and will be assisted in finding the ideal nonprofit to serve as a board member. Corporations benefit from retaining talent by deepening their commitment to our region and increased visibility as a corporate supporter of leading nonprofits.
One OnBoard graduate said, “”I’m now engaged in ongoing discussions with two nonprofits about how I can help on committees or become a board member. I’m excited to put what I learned to use.” Another graduate said the program “dealt directly with the real issues facing boards and practical training to make an immediate impact.”
OnBoard is led by Dr. Alex Miller, the William B. Stokely Chair of Business in the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business, and the Pro2Serve Director of the Consortium for Social Enterprise. The six evening training sessions take place in state-of-the-art facilities at the Alliance for Better Nonprofits’ headquarters in The Regas Building, located in downtown Knoxville. Corporations are limited to three participants per class. Tuition is $1,000 per person and includes instruction by award-winning faculty from the Haslam College of Business, all training materials, and an inventory of personal skills and interests used to match participants and local nonprofits.
